GEO in 2026: what changes now that AI Overviews have reached France

Google rolled out AI Overviews in France on 22 July 2026. What it changes for GEO: measured click losses, the new IAB standard, three priority actions.

Since the summer of 2026, GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) stopped being a forward-looking idea and became an operational priority. The trigger was Google rolling out AI Overviews in France on 22 July 2026. With organic click-through rates measurably falling wherever AI answers appear, the goal is no longer only to attract traffic, but to be cited, summarised and recommended by the answer engines themselves. The measurement guidelines the IAB published in August 2026 confirm the shift.

Why did GEO become urgent this summer?

The first months of the year were a watching brief. The summer settled the question. On 22 July, Google officially rolled out AI Overviews and AI Mode in France, after nearly two years of testing on other markets.

What that means in practice is that the results page as we knew it moves to second place. Someone asks a question, and the AI writes a complete answer at the top. A brand missing from that summary is absent from the discovery and consideration stages, even when it ranks well just below. Search-to-Decision is now a French reality.

What is the real impact of AI Overviews on organic traffic?

The data is landing, and it confirms what was anticipated in the spring: a clear erosion of traditional blue-link traffic. Studies across Europe and the United States all point the same way.

ScopeSourceResult
France, 963 domainsAhrefs-5.7% median CTR, -8.8% clicks
France, .fr domainsAhrefs-12.3% clicks, median
France, highly exposed sites (over 20% of queries with an AIO)Ahrefs-23.1% CTR in 9 days
United KingdomAuthoritas-47.5% CTR on desktop
GermanySistrix-25 to -30%
United States, 64 news sitesDefine Media-42%

One detail changes how these numbers should be read: AI Overviews do not trigger everywhere. Across the French panel studied by Ahrefs, the median trigger rate is 5.4%, with 29% of sites already above 10%. The impact is therefore very uneven, and it tracks exposure closely: each additional point of AI Overview rate costs roughly one point of CTR.

News publishers report traffic losses of 33% to 38% on some European markets.

The conclusion is hard to avoid: yesterday's traffic is not coming back. The task is to capture attention where it has moved.

How is the IAB redefining performance measurement?

If clicks are falling, how does a team prove the return on its work? That is what changed in August 2026, with the publication of the IAB guidelines, Measuring Visibility in the AI Era.

The industry is finally agreeing on shared standards. The click stops being the only currency. AI share of voice takes its place: how often a brand surfaces across prompts, how often the models cite it, and how accurately they describe it. The best salesperson is no longer only on the landing page, it is inside the ChatGPT or Perplexity interface.

What are the three priorities before the end of 2026?

Three steps to take without waiting:

1. Run an AI visibility audit: start by knowing where the brand stands. Type customer questions into the different AI engines. Is the brand cited? Is the information accurate, or is the model inventing things about the offer?

2. Move to AEO content (Answer Engine Optimisation): stop writing dense blocks of text. Think Direct Answer Box. Put conclusions and definitions in the opening lines. Use clean semantic HTML, with tables, lists and precise headings, so machines can extract the content.

3. Strengthen E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness): AI engines favour trust. Lean on original data, first-hand experience and real expert input, to show the page is not one more generic site.

Search is moving fast, but the underlying logic has not changed: quality and clarity win. The point is not to hack the algorithm, it is to become the source it naturally chooses to cite.
